The University of New Orleans (UNO) was first established in
1956, and was originally known as Louisiana State University in New Orleans
(LSUNO). LSUNO contained a total of just 1,498 students and 63 faculty
members in 1958. In 1974, the name of the university was officially changed
from LSUNO to simply UNO. Today UNO occupies nearly 350 acres on the main
campus in addition to leased property at several satellite locations in the
metro area. UNO began an ASCE student club in 1976, which was founded by
fellow students, but the club did not receive official recognition as a
chapter nationally until 1981. Now UNO's ASCE student chapter has vastly
grown to include over 50 members who participate in many functions
throughout the year.
The main event of the year for the ASCE - UNO
Student Chapter is participating in the Deep South Regional
Conference. The UNO chapter typically competes in the exciting Steel
Bridge and Concrete Canoe competitions, as well as a surveying competition,
mystery event, and the National Daniel W. Mead Student Paper contest.
