New Chapter of Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society
Founded on UNO Campus

Society’s Executive Director, Eileen Evans
The founding ceremony for the Beta Lambda Chapter of Phi Beta Delta was held in UNO’s University Center on Friday, November 21. Phi Beta Delta is an international honor society, first established in 1986, for the purpose of recognizing scholarly achievement in international education. Currently, there are almost 140 chapters world-wide. According to the Society’s national headquarters in Washington, D.C., the Society specifically seeks to provide recognition for “international students and scholars, U.S. students who have studied abroad, and faculty and staff involved in international activities.”

Dr. Janice Marie Thomas
It also seeks to “serve as a vehicle for the development of academic-based international programming; to provide a network on each campus of faculty, staff and students involved in international endeavors; and to extend this network to thousands of members in chapters across the country and throughout the world.”

Dr. Niyi Osundare

Dr. Janice Marie Thomas, Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars, presided over the founding ceremony, which was attended by the Society’s Executive Director, Eileen Evans, who spoke to the audience about the group’s history.

Research Professor of English, Niyi Osundare, provided the keynote speech. Ms. Mirka Jichova, an international graduate student in English and Jazz Studies and an inductee, provided a musical interlude, and Dr. Timothy Ryan, Chancellor of UNO, made the formal presentation of the medallions and certificates to the more than forty UNO students, faculty, and staff members who were inducted into the society.

Chancellor Tim Ryan is presented with the Phi Beta Delta Medallion.

The inductees were selected for membership on the strength of their contributions to international education, their participation in international programs, and their scholarship.

UNO and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette are currently the only two universities in the state of Louisiana with a local chapter of the honor society. Students, staff, and faculty who wish to apply for membership should contact Janice Thomas, Director of the Office of International Students and Scholars, University Center, Room 260, University of New Orleans, New Orleans, LA 70148.
