Gem & Mineral Society of Louisiana, Inc. Field Trip News

Our next trip will be to the Triton stone yard in Harahan, so if you are interested, we will meet in the northeast corner of the Lakeview Mall (Causeway at 17th Street) at 8:45am on Oct. 27th. This will be an education in rock identification (as opposed to mineral identification) by Alexander Falster. Parking at the Triton location is somewhat limited, so I would like people to carpool from the Mall. Triton is opening their doors early for us in exchange for their being allowed to share in the learning; perhaps we will get some perspective from their standpoint, too. Nothing other than your curiosity is required. A hand lens is a handy, but optional, addition. This is indoors, so there are no excuses for no-shows this time.

GOLD Exhibit at the Old U.S.Mint from October 20th, 2007 through January 2nd, 2008
Marinta Skupin would like to recruit some students from the department who can serve as tour guides for groups of school students who will visit the exhibition. Training will be provided by the Louisiana State Museum's Education Department in the week of October 20 - 27, 2007. The exact times will still be determined, but the total training won't exceed 2 sessions of 2-3 hours each. Having successfully completed the training sessions, we ask that the students commit at least one morning a week, either a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday morning, from 10 AM and 11:30 AM to serve as a tour guide. Tours will be conducted from October 30, 2007 through December 14, 2007.

In exchange, they will offer students free admission to the exhibition at any time. This is also a chance to gain valuable experience, and as an opportunity for some community service.

If you are interested in volunteering please contact Dr. Kulp or Marinta Skupin, Curator of Education for Louisiana State Museum: (504) 568-6970

Southeast Louisiana Refuges Complex
Atchafalaya, Bayou Sauvage, Bayou Teche, Big Branch Marsh, Bogue Chitto, Breton, Delta, and Mandalay National Wildlife Refuges

You’re Invited….
To volunteer at WILD THINGS 2007
October 13, 2007   10 am – 5 pm
SE LA Refuges Headquarters, Lacombe, Louisiana

Now in its 10th year, Wild Things is a celebration of National Wildlife Refuge Week and our area refuges, and is one of the most popular nature/conservation events in the area.

Wild Things features exciting speakers, live animals, demonstrations such as pirogue building and wildlife crafts, continuous live entertainment, gardens and grounds tours, youth wildlife art competition and show (over 250 entries last year!), special “Kid Activities” like the Wildland Fire Academy and Bear Maze, and canoe and pontoon boat tours of beautiful Bayou Lacombe. Last year 23 guest exhibitors enjoyed meeting and sharing with over 1500 Wild Things visitors. Admission, parking, and all tours and programs are free.

Wild Things is co-sponsored by the non-profit Friends of LA Wildlife Refuges in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Food and drink sales at Wild Things help The Friends to support conservation and education projects on area National Wildlife Refuges such as the annual Youth Fishing Rodeo, summer nature camps, bus transportation for school visits to refuges, habitat restoration, trail signs, and many other worthy projects.

It takes many hands to make Wild Things the success that it has become. Please consider taking part to help with serving food, welcoming visitors, book and t-shirt sales, or other tasks.  For more information contact Byron Fortier or Doug Hunt at 985-882-2000.

Please consider being part of Wild Things 2007!
